Dear Student,

If you were under the age of 19 as of Dec 31, 2014 and could use $2500 for your Post Secondary Education, then read on...

We have again partnered with some neighbouring clubs to hold our Annual Essay and Oratorical Contests.  We hope to have numerous entries in the following 3 categories:

o   Grade 6 and under,

o   Grades 7-8, and

o   Grade 9 and up.

These competitions are a great way to show your creativity and compete for up to $2500 in scholarship funds.

This year’s Essay Topic is “Optimism Should Be A Priority”.  You need to write between 700-800 words about your thoughts on this topic following all of the Optimist International rules and submit them to us by the 12th of February, 2015

The Oratorical Topic is “How My Optimism Will Help Me Press on to Greater Achievements of the Future”.  It should not take you too long to find enough ideas to write a four to five minute speech on that topic.  The oratorical contest will be held in Waterloo on February 25, 2015.  That should give you plenty of time to prepare a good argument.

All information this year will be online or you can contact us below. You can download applications by going to www.westvale-waterloo-optimist.com or facebook at WestvaleWaterlooOptimistClub

and searching “Essay contest” and/or “Oratorical Contest”.  The rules are all listed on the same 8.5” x 11” page as the application.   It is very important that you read and follow the rules as listed on the application form so that you do not lose any points for anything silly!!!  Once the applications have been filled out and signed by a parent or guardian, they can be scanned and returned to us before January 30th, 2015.  Or they can be mailed to Maurie Sheppard at the below address.  We will contact you via an email or phone to encourage you and to provide further details, such as the location and time of the Oratorical Contest.

All entrants in both competitions will receive a certificate of participation.  The top ranking participants in each category will each receive a gift certificate and possibly move on to the zone, regional and district level competitions to compete for up to $2500 in scholarships for both the Oratorical and the Essay Competitions.

We, the Optimists, recognize that you, the youth of today, have so many fresh ideas about the world and your future.  And we want to hear them!!  Our goal is to encourage and help bring out the best in each and every one of you.  We hope that you all go on in life to fulfill your dreams and be productive.  All of you deserve the best that life has to offer.  So please, take the time and sign up for one or both of our contests.  Who knows where the simple act of filling out the forms will lead…Be sure to follow all the rules so you don't lose any points!!

Thanks for your interest.  We wish you good luck and look forward to hearing your ideas!!

Please complete the appropriate application form (download from the Application Form Page) and get it back to us by 4pm on January 30th, 2015
